Following Up On Gaza Hospital Bombing
The leading Israeli human rights group, B’Tselem, put out the statement below regarding the bombing yesterday of al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza. I have already weighed in on this question, perhaps even prematurely, but the "assessments" from the US and Israel, as well as from Hamas and PIJ, are all open to question as self-serving. So, indeed, let's see a credible investigation. I’m all for it.
In the meantime, let’s not forget that, whatever the truth of this, Israel did hit that hospital previously, it has hit MANY civilian sites, and has killed over 1,000 children in Gaza already.
The whole world is shocked by the horror of hundreds killed and wounded in a large explosion in the al-Ahli Hospital courtyard in Gaza, where thousands of people were seeking shelter from the incessant Israeli strikes.
The war of words Israel, Hamas and Islamic Jihad are now engaging in over who’s responsible is also being waged at the expense of the victims, ignoring the suffering of their families and of hundreds of thousands more who are in fear for their lives.
News channels have already closed the case, but only an independent investigation by a reliable, impartial, international actor can bring accountability. The ICC is the right institution for job, and the international community has the power and the responsibility to demand it.
