Interview with Prof. Joel Beinin

I speak with Joel Beinin, Professor Emeritus at Stanford University, about October 7, the film Holding Liat, the future after the Gaza genocide, and much more in this fascinating interview.
[Dear readers: In my previous newsletter, I listed only 26 of the 27 democratic senators who voted to block the latest sale of weapons to Israel. I omitted Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. Apologies for the error.]

Joel Beinin is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History and Professor of Middle East History, Emeritus at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1982 before coming to Stanford in 1983. From 2006 to 2008 he served as Director of Middle East Studies and Professor of History at the American University in Cairo. In 2002 he served as president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America.

In this interview, we talk about his experience after October 7, when his niece was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz. Her family’s experience was made into a documentary, Holding Liat, earlier this year. We also explore how we can talk about that event and the Gaza genocide as sharp critics of Israel and Zionism, what the future might look like and much more.

France, Great Britain, and Canada’s recognition of a Palestinian state might matter someday. But, as usual, the Palestinians won’t get any immediate help from Europe, much less from North America, in stopping the Gaza genocide now.
